The Significance of Teaching - Urban Learners 1999-2017

An invitation to Urban Learner Alumni
To Celebrate with Us
October 20 | 9:30am – 3pm

The UBC Urban Learner M.Ed. Program has been running for 18 years, now in its 11th cohort. The program holds a vibrant history of teaching in Vancouver and the lower mainland, living through job action, contract disputes, and curriculum changes. Each cohort brought a clear vision of urban schools as well as particular pedagogical challenges and possibilities within their vibrant neighborhoods. Each cohort grew into a unique learning environment of care as a recurring theme, wherein scholarship, research, narratives and best practices were shared and explored.

While each of you knows the timely issues that preoccupied your cohort, this collective gathering will acknowledge and celebrate the range of research across more than 250 teachers and nearly two decades. The UL11 cohort group will host the event, inspiring a renewed theme we will all gather around – the significance of teaching.

The Significance of Teaching Installation – July 2017

The Significance of Teaching is a compelling glimpse into education as social practice, as blatant and visceral renderings of teaching situated inside urban narratives and neighborhoods. During a three-week Masters of Education institute, “Urban Public Renderings,” twenty two urban teachers created the installation’s contemporary interweaving of collage, photography, drawings, objects and text. Within a studio-pedagogy space, reflections on teaching became thinking-making embodiments for the teachers wherein urban schools and practices––plural and particular––materialized. Educational scholars and artists visited the studio space, complicating meanings of teaching in conversation with the teachers and pointing to what remains urgent in education today. In forum and public gatherings, The Significance of Teaching provokes further thinking-making incarnations and inter-actions around teaching, its realities and possibilities, by inviting new graphic layers, juxtapositions and infiltrations to the installation from its viewers.

This event will be hosted by the UL11 Cohort students, and will take place at:
