Master of Education in Sustainability, Regeneration & Resilience
Shaping a more sustainable, resilient future through education
The Master of Education in Sustainability, Regeneration and Resilience prepares sustainability professionals to respond creatively and collaboratively to complex social, ecological, and climate challenges through adult learning and education (ALE). Drawing onresearch in social innovation, transformative learning, and classrooms for social change, the program brings together Education, Forestry, and Land and Food Systems at UBC in a distinctive interdisciplinary learning community. UBC Farm serves as a home classroom and living laboratory where students connect adult learning theory with community engagement and the implementation of sustainability policy in practice. Through a cohort-based community of practice, students develop capacities in active listening, dialogue, systems thinking, social innovation, and collaborative inquiry, while engaging critically with sustainability, Indigeneity, climate justice, ecology, conservation, leadership, and well-being. Importantly, two courses have been developed collaboratively with First Nations communities in Lil’wat Nation and Haida Gwaii, creating opportunities to learn through Indigenous knowledge, land-based pedagogy, and community relationships. Students co-create learning journeys oriented toward justice, well-being, and transformative change.

About
Built on the foundational principles of adult education, this unique MEd presents a fresh perspective on cultivating skills, attitudes, and dispositions that regenerates our relationships with the land, forests, and communities.
This part-time, hybrid program is designed for a diverse range of individuals, including:
- Undergraduates in Education, Forestry, or Land & Food Systems seeking to advance their learning and careers.
- Working professionals from various sectors aiming to integrate their experience with educational leadership research.
- Individuals seeking to transition into education or training roles related to regeneration and resilience.
Program highlights
- Summer Institute: Explore complexity, sustainability, and complicity in climate change, education, and justice, guided by adult education principles. Build connections at a mini-retreat at Loon Lake .
- Research Design & Methods: The program will employ the social innovation process for collaborative group work — the third third course teaches and “rehearses” this method or the group and individual projects. Develop skills in defining project scope, framing research questions, and prototyping solutions.
- Two courses undertaken in collaboration with the Haida Gwaii and Lil’wat First Nation.
- Apply social innovation in group projects at UBC Farm. With a focus on implementing student-driven policies, the end goal of the two-course sequence is a public presentation.
