January & February 2013 | Workshop Series on Academic Writing for International StudentsThe Faculty of Education is offering a series of three workshops on academic writing for international students in the coming winter semester. The three workshops are organized as follows:
While each workshop focuses on one of these functional areas, the aim of the workshop series is to raise students’ awareness of how writers’ choices in these three functional areas work together in academic texts and contexts. Each workshop combines a brief interactive presentation on the functional area of writing in focus and opportunities for students to analyze, discuss, assess and revise writing. In these processes, students are encouraged to reflect on what they want to achieve in specific written texts, and to negotiate the message given their academic readers’ interests, including expectations related to the task and the relevant academic discipline. Participating students are asked to bring one or more samples of their university writing to the workshops and, if possible, to attend all three workshops. Interested students are asked to reserve a place by January 15, 2012. RSVP to gisseduc@gmail.com Priority will be given to student who commit to attending all 3 events. This year we are fortunate that one of our own PhD candidates in LLED, Alfredo Ferreira will be facilitating this event. Alfredo’s research interests are English for professional academic purposes; degrees of concreteness and abstraction in 2nd language, graduate-level academic writing; systemic functional linguistics and socio-cultural theory; multimodality; and student inquiry in EAP. |
